The Environment Rating Scales (ERS) measure environmental quality in the classroom. Three ERS instruments will be used: the Family Child Care Environment Rating Scale Revised (FCCERS-R), the Infant/Toddler Environment Rating Scale Revised (ITERS-R), and the Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale Revised (ECERS-R).
Each scale is used in care environments that serve children of various age groups and settings:
- FCCERS-R is used in family child care programs serving children ages birth through school age.
- ITERS-R is used in center-based child care programs serving children ages birth to 30 months.
- ECERS-R is used in center-based child care programs serving children ages 30 months to five years.
There are several documents that are used as references to complete scoring of the scales.
- Interview Questions
The observation also includes an interview with the family child care provider or classroom teacher. The questions are mailed to programs in advance of the observation so staff is able to review questions prior to the observation. Each scale has its own unique questions the observers may ask to learn more about care practices in the care environment.
- Confirmation Packet Information
After scheduling an observation, a Confirmation Packet is mailed to the program. The confirmation packet includes documents intended to serve as a resource for programs to prepare for the observation.
